Unexpected candidate
“Celebrities are part of the culture of distraction today” (Rojek, 2001, p90)
One of the most scandalous political events in the recent time was Donald Trump’s announcement of his candidacy to be the next President of the United States of America. Tump’s candidacy consisted of a lot of different opinions from which most of them could be seen as inappropriate, unfair and offensive.
It is no surprise that the candidacy that looked a lot like a twisted joke was portrayed as such in the media especially in tabloid newspapers. One of them was the ‘Daily News’ which is an American tabloid newspaper that done exactly that. Taking one of the pictures of Trump and turning it into an image of a clown, the headline “clown runs for prez” makes it even more mocking and surreal.
The attempt to use shortened version of the word president is a lot like an attempt to compare Trump to a teenager, who has very little sense of what life is actually like, just like a youngster who is immature and unstable. This is the image this front page is painting for the idea of his candidacy.
Another important feature in this front page is the added picture of the seal of the President of the United States of America, it bring out the importance of the matter in question and the possibility of him becoming the president true. This front page should bring the feelings of uncertainty and unknown into the thoughts of the readers as one might wonder that Trump is a businessman, a celebrity and an entertainer. Making them doubt his competency in running for president. This front page as scandalous as it might look makes the reader think of what it would mean to them as citizens if he was to win and would then lead the nation for the next four years.
